UNFPA is hosting a networking event at the World Urban Forum in partnership with the Malaysian Research Institute for Ageing (MyAgeing) of University Putra Malaysia, to highlight critical issues related to cities, their interlinkages with population dynamics, and the need for services, particularly amongst vulnerable groups like the elderly, within the context of the fast-changing Asia Pacific Region.
The event addresses the first transformative commitment of the New Urban Agenda and a priority theme of the 9th World Urban Forum, ‘Sustainable urban development for social inclusion and ending poverty’. The event emphasises the importance of engaging with the academia in their efforts to inform both policy makers as well as public opinion, particularly on the importance of resilient institutions and good urban governance for the elderly.
The event will include performances that celebrate healthy ageing in urban environments, and the role of music and dance in ensuring quality of life for the elderly, promoting good health and delaying the risk of debilitative conditions. The Veterans Association of Radio Television Malaysia, as well as a South American dance instructor, Fasilito, will take the participants through an interactive event that showcases the best of Malaysian songs from the 60’s and 70’s, and ending with an exhibition of the classical dance form of Salsa.
