Building skills to design good urban policies and legislation

Training Events Sunday 11 February 2018, 11:00 - 14:00

Room 406

Organization

  • Sir William Dale Center for Legislative Studies, Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of LOndon

Summary

The purpose of the training event is a) to build the understanding of those involved in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda (local authorities, governments, urban planners etc) around the need for urban legislation of good quality b) to raise awareness on the features of 'good' urban laws and c) to equip them with practical skills to design good urban laws.

The NUA identifies laws, institutions and systems of governance (urban governance and supportive frameworks) as three means of implementation that can cement the relationship between urbanization and sustainable development. In fact, the implementation of the NUA and of the SDGS largely depends on the adoption, enactment and enforcement of urban legislation that can deliver results. However, current experience shows that both developed and developing countries face a number of challenges in designing and enforcing effective legislative frameworks for sustainable urban development. This is due (among other reasons) to a lack of awareness of what constitutes a good urban law and the lack of specialized skills on how to design effective legislation.
