Urbanisation in Malaysia - Learning from the experience

Summary

The New Economic Policy (1971-1990), followed by The National Development Policy (1991-2000)and Vision 2020 (1991-2020) were introduced to address the social and economic imbalanced left by colonial masters and guide Malaysia to become a developed nation. The government took an active role to guide the overall of development of the country. The Government was successful in addressing issues related

to eradication of poverty, encouraging rapid urbanization, redistribute the wealth among the communities and thereby strengthening national unity and promote sustainable economic growth. The experiences of Malaysia can be shared among the participants.

Urban Governance for Resilience Building – perspectives, tools and processes for governing cities for a resilient future Grassroots approaches in informal settlement upgrading in South Africa: the Isulabantu Project, in Durban (Informal Settlements Upgrading Led by the Community)
