Supporting Civil Society to Achieve SDG 11 & the New Urban Agenda: What is Philanthropy's Role?

The role of civil society in achieving the SDGs and New Urban Agenda cannot be overstated. Civil society organizations are comprised of, and function in close concert with, those whose lives are affected daily by issues the global agendas aim to address: housing, sanitation, access to jobs and opportunities, the disastrous effects of climate change, and so forth.

There are a number of ways that foundations can support civil society organizations – in short, there is more than simply providing grants. This event will be an opportunity to discuss what foundations can – and can’t – do to support such groups. Bringing together foundation representatives from large, multi-national to local funders will allow us to explore a range of entry points for philanthropy to engage with civil society groups. We will also include testimonials from current grantees and partners to give their perspective on what foundations do well in this space – and what can be further explored or improved.
