Summary

Our Science to Action (S2A) approach to sustainable development and low carbon urban planning revolves around three key thrusts that are well aligned with the 17 SDGs as well as the three transformative commitments of the NUA, as follows:

'Thrust 1: Prosperous, robust and globally competitive economy' aligns with SDGs 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, and 17, and the NUA transformative commitment 1: sustainable and inclusive urban prosperity and opportunities for all.

'Thrust 2: Healthy, creative, knowledgeable and inclusive community' aligns with SDGs 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, and 17, and the NUA transformative commitment 2: sustainable urban development for social inclusion and ending poverty.

'Thrust 3: Ecologically friendly, liveable and resilient built environment' aligns with SDGs 6, 11, 13, 14, 15, and 17, and the NUA transformative commitment 3: environmentally sustainable and resilient urban development.

The above three thrusts provide a framework that guides our multidisciplinary research and policy-making activities that holistically cover key urban sectors of land use, transportation, urban design, architecture, energy system, economy, community engagement, environment, and urban governance. Implementation of the resultant city-level sustainability and climate policies therefore contributes to the achievement of the SDGs and the NUA with which the three thrusts are aligned accordingly.
