Summary

On the 8th February from 1-2pm, the International Growth Centre’s Cities that Work initiative, in collaboration with the Kampala Capital City Authority, will be hosting a workshop on urban land use and planning for prosperous cities. As part of this, Executive Director Jennifer Musisi will be speaking to the challenges in land use that urban policymakers face, based on her experiences in delivering transformative urban policy change in Kampala. Cities that Work Manager Astrid Haas will also be leading structured discussions between policymakers, academics and practitioners around three key questions:

What role do land rights and regulations play in promoting land markets?
How can land use planning regulations help and hinder productive, livable and sustainable cities?
When and how should government land acquisition be implemented in implementing the New Urban Agenda?

The workshop will draw on the experiences of a range of cities including Kampala, Kigali, Nairobi and Singapore, as well as cutting edge research on land rights and urban land use, to inform practical policymaking. Discussions will explore policy trade-offs and opportunities to learn from successes in reforming land use and planning in implementing the New Urban Agenda.
