Summary

The New Urban Agenda aims to develop policies and implementation that build sustainable urban ecosystems, and tenure security is a key to it. Urban inequity is clearly visible in the access to tenure security, and millions of urban informal citizens are always at the risk of evictions. Therefore tools are required to be built and sharpened which seek ways by which the issue of tenure security is addressed.

Cities over the global south are facing innumerable challenges with several informal settlements that continue to be deprived of access to basic services which in turn is linked to tenure security. Absence of good quality data about cities and their informal residents makes translation of development goals into real implementation on the ground challenging.

However, over the past several years, SDI and its affiliates and through its partnership with organizations such as GLTN have sought different ways to address the issue of tenure security. These have been important catalysts that have brought the discussion of tenure security to the table. At this side event, some of the champions of these processes in SDI and GLTN will share their experience.
