Summary

The Agenda 2030/Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda are crucial commitments on the global level to ensure that the world problems could be targeted and solved for the future generations. The world community – lead by the United Nations, but followed by all different subnational levels – must now take care of the successful implementation of the agendas otherwise they won't be effective. This implementation can only be done on the local level where the people live their daily life and form the civil society. But somehow and sometimes the local level is not aware of global problems as they have to deal with the local problems.

This is where the Mannheim Model draws in. The art of implementing global agendas is to crosslinking them with the local agendas and not high lightening one of the two. This process must involve all civil groups – of all sizes – within participation systems beyond the ordinary. In Mannheim the global agendas are cross-linked with the just started 'Mannheim Agenda 2030' process. The 'Mannheim Agenda 2030' must not stay in opposition to the global agendas. Two milestones are crucial within the 'Mannheim Model of Implementation' – first the 'Urban Thinkers Campus' (and 'The City we Need' project), which was held in Mannheim for the second time after one on the way to the 'New Urban Agenda' and second the establishment of a monitoring system in cooperation and alignment with the national and global level, institutions, associations, networks and scientific research at universities.

At the Urban Thinkers Campus all different civic groups were involved and as a successful follow up the civil society in Mannheim now is aware of the global agendas including the press and media field who is now advocating for these targets. The most important point was and is to ensure that the local civil society understands, sees and feels, that global problems are connected to the local communities and effect their daily live. Without staying together in solving these problems both levels will fail, the global and the local.
