Summary

The urban response to sustainability-related issues is crucial to fight climate change at the global level, to promote sustainable and inclusive economic models, as well as resource-efficient and resilient infrastructure. The promotion of sustainable cities is the major, urgent challenge that our society faces: Robust scientific knowledge is pivotal to inform climate actions and equip policy makers and practitioners with cutting-edge, up-to-date researches and recommendations.

One of the New Urban Agenda commitments is to promote international, national, subnational and local climate action, including climate change adaptation and mitigation, and to supporting the efforts of cities and human settlements, their inhabitants and all local stakeholders as important implementers.

This networking event aims at promoting and discussing science-based climate action for cities. It will bring together representatives from scientific bodies, national and subnational governments and urban and climate change practitioners to advance climate action based on science, practice and policy.

The discussions held at this event will contribute to the on-going discussions about the science-policy interface of which the 2018 Science Conference on Cities and Climate Change (5-7 March in Edmonton, Canada) is the central event. The 'CitiesIPCC' Conference is the first ever conference on cities cosponsored by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The conference will improve scientific knowledge and stimulate research underpinning effective and efficient urban responses to climate change, as well as provide suggestions to produce inputs to the products of the IPCC. The conference will also establish a global research agenda aimed at informing policies and practices adopted by practitioners and policy-makers.

This networking event contributes to SDG 11.b and to SDG 13 by bringing multiple communities together and promoting research on accelerating effective climate action in human settlements.
