Summary

Local and central government representatives in the areas of waste management, environment, sanitation, and urban planning, NGOs, international organizations, academic, civil engineers in both public and private sectors in promoting 3R and clean cities are welcome to participate in this side event which will introduce the 'Fukuoka Method', a landfill and solid waste management system developed jointly by Fukuoka University and Fukuoka City Government in Japan, now Japan's standard landfill technology, UNFCC approved for carbon credits due to its greenhouse gas emission reducing technology, and widely spread among many developing countries in Asia and the Pacific, Africa and Latin America. Followed by a keynote presentation from one of the founders of the Fukuoka method, who has provided training to engineers from over 130 countries, the side event will introduce the most recent project undertaken in Kenya jointly by UN-Habitat and Fukuoka University, and several other cases from the Asian region such as Malaysia, Vietnam and others, to discuss realistic methods and strategies to address municipal waste issues; from tackling existing de-facto dump sites in urban areas, development of efficient collection and transportation systems and managing a technically sound and environmentally safe landfill treatment system using locally available materials under pressing situations such as lack of technical and financial resources. The event will also introduce and discuss university to university collaborations between Fukuoka University and universities in Europe, Asia, and Africa which include exchange of programs, joint study on environmental technology including research and analysis, and exchange of students, which contribute to strengthening technical capacities of local authorities. The side event will also aim to develop a network of solid waste management partners to share experience, information, and to enhance cooperation, partnership and opportunities among experts, groups, donor communities and cities.
